Books I Love

Please, please, please check out Robyn O’Brien’s book, “The UnHealthy Truth, How Our Food Is Making Us Sick–and What We Can Do About It.” (Broadway Publishing)  If you suspect, or have concerns about your children having food allergies or food sensitivities, this well written book not only informs, it offers concrete, reasonable advice on how to make changes in your family’s diet.  Food allergies can contribute to everything from skin ailments like eczema to temper-tantrums to chronic ear infections and lowered immune systems.   Robyn is the founder of Allergy Kids in Boulder, CO  — www.allergykids.com and is fighting the good fight in keeping kids and families healthy.  Every parent should read this book…and it seems more than worthwhile to make mention of it here!

For general medical (alternative and conventional) help, I like “Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child” by Janet Zand, Rachel Walton and Bob Rountree, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, registered nurse, and medical doctor, respectively.

It’s well written and thorough in talking about illnesses, home safety, conventional medicine, suppliers and resources. It also includes dietary guidelines and suggestions for dietary supplements like vitamins, herbs and homeopathics, as well as suggestions for allopathic treatments which might absolutely be called for. I see so few books combining information about both natural and conventional therapies without judgement.

One of my favorite home remedies is something called Rescue Remedy, a Bach flower essence formula, great for adults, kids and even pets (!). A few drops can help calm and relieve fear or panic in a wide variety of situations – when a child is upset, angry, crying, or otherwise afraid or tense (even without knowing why). While the theory behind flower essences might be hard to fully grasp, they are documented to work very well and are extremely gentle and have no conflicts with foods or medicines.

I love suggestions for books – I can never have too many!

Cathe Olson writes cookbooks and they are good cookbooks. Every mom should own a copu of “The Vegetarian Mother’s Cookbook,” as well as “Simply Natural Babyfoods.” Now I am not a vegetarian, still Cathe’s books are so nutritionally sound that if you are going to be a vegetarian mom, then this is the perfect book AND if you are not a vegetarian, like me, it is still a great book because of all the veggies she uses. Truth is, Americans do not get enough vegetables in their diet, and Cathe presents a diet not only vegetable rich, but also tasty vegetable rich!

A few weeks ago she sent me her newest cookbook, called “Lick It.” This is a cookbook of frozen, non-dairy desserts. I do not eat dairy products, and I know that lots of people are reactive to dairy, so this book is a dream. I especially like her use of coconut milk! This is a wonderful book to have on hand for the summer months when you and your family are craving cold, sweet treats.

Thanks, Cathe. This is not only a great cookbook, but it’s one of the most fun cookbooks I’ve come across so far!
